Workplace safety, especially on a construction site, is extremely important. Small mishaps or inattentiveness can lead to accidents that can cause serious injury or even death.

In order to avoid top safety concerns on a construction site, it’s important to understand OSHA standards and preventative measures. This article will cover some of OSHA’s most cited standards so you can prepare your team and lead them to a safer work environment on the construction site.

The Top Two Construction Site Safety Concerns

When it comes to keeping your workers safe on a construction site, you must be aware of these two major safety concerns.

  • Fall Protection

Employers must be sure that construction sites have appropriate fall protection systems in place before the job begins. Since the lack of these protective systems is a leading cause of serious injury and death, it must be a priority.

It is the obligation of the employer to provide fall protection systems to keep workers safe on walking or working surfaces with unprotected edges or sides that are six feet above a lower level. This includes guardrails, safety net systems, and personal fall arrest systems. Guardrails will prevent a fall from occurring, while the latter two systems prevent a worker from falling a great distance.

  • Scaffold Inspection

The majority of construction work is performed on scaffolds, and this risky environment can expose workers to falls, falling objects, and electrocution.

Employers must ensure the scaffold is installed and unassembled properly. Before each day, the scaffold must be inspected to ensure it is safe for workers to use.

Scaffolding should be erected on a solid surface, fully planked, and at least 10 feet away from any power lines. It should also include guardrails, midrails, and toe boards to protect employees on and around the structure.
